The Sillar Route
WE TAILOR MADE ALL OUR PROGRAMS!
Arequipa is distinguished as the "white city" and obtained its name for a reason, its architecture. Learn more about the process of obtaining the white volcanic rock (Sillar) and the importance of this as a resource for Arequipa to maintain such astounding architecture.
Our excursion will start with a visit to the quarry of Añashuayco, a canyon with 30 meters (99 ft) height walls that keep these volcanic rocks. Here, we will appreciate the masons’ art, their techniques, observe the sillar extraction, the stages to obtain the brick and its important link to people as an economical role for their subsistence.
After our quarry visit, we will enjoy a small hike through the Culebrillas gully, a small land formation from volcanic rocks. Here, we will enjoy a 30 min. walk observing petroglyphs with zoomorphic figures made by a pre-Inca culture. Later in the day, we will return to Arequipa’s downtown.
