With more than 3270 meters of depth (10728 ft.), the Colca Canyon as one of the most remote and visited places in Peru after Machu Picchu will allow us to observe not only the amazing landscapes but also the most famous attraction; the flight of the Andean Condor.
Day 1
Our visit to the Colca Canyon begins with our trip from Arequipa towards Chivay. This journey will take us through landscapes full of nature and mountains characteristic of the Andean world. On route, we will surround the Chachani volcano and a national reserve where we will observe the famous South American camelid; the vicuna. Then, we will arrive at Patahuasi where we will taste the muña and coca leaves tea while we enjoy the view of the rock formations.
Our next stop is the highest point (4710 meters/ 15452 ft) of our journey; Patapampa. Also known as the volcano viewpoint or 'Mirador de Los volcanes', it will allow us to observe the volcanoes the surround the valley.
From this point, if we are adventure lovers, we could arrive in Chivay by bike. If desired, previous organization, we will descend to the valley through dirt and sand roads with a spectacular view proper of the mountain biking and downhill sports. At our arrival, we will enjoy a buffet lunch made with local ingredients to then have the evening free to enjoy the village or “La Calera” hot springs with a relaxing bath*.
Day 2
This day, we will start our day with an early travel to the famous Colca Canyon viewpoint called the Condor cross or ‘La Cruz del Condor’. From that point, we will enjoy the canyon’s geography and if possible we will see the enigmatic Andean condor flight. After some minutes there, we will go to a quieter place, another viewpoint, to test our luck and see if we find more condors around.
Our return towards Chivay will allow us to visit some characteristic towns on route such as Pinchollo, Maca, Achoma, and Yanque. Besides their people, traditional dances, pre-Inca and Inca terraces, picturesque temples and colonial main squares are also their attractions.
