The Sacred Valley located in Cusco, Peru, is famously known because of its archaeological sites. Pisac and Ollantaytambo are the most visited places after Machu Picchu. However, the name its name belongs to a different context.

The Sacred Valley in Cusco has a great weather agriculturally speaking; its temperature oscillates between 14-20 degrees Celsius. Also, its fertile soil makes this valley genuinely sacred since it allows food production not too far from the city of Cusco.

Through our visit, we will understand better the meaning of its name and why even nowadays is still essential for Cusco’s region. Our first visit will take place in Pisac. Here we will visit its archaeological complex that is compound of agricultural terraces and pre-colonial buildings. During this stay, we will also explore the Pisac Market. A local and artisans market that used to be a vital center to good exchanges known as “trueque” which was the ancient economic exchange before currency. These days, the Pisac Market allows us to find different textiles, souvenirs, handicrafts and, antiquities.

Our next visit will be Ollantaytambo, an Inca city located almost one-hour driving from Pisac. During this journey, we will observe besides the picturesque sacred valley towns, some endemic and exotic flora that belongs to the Sacred Valley. Also, we will make a stop in Urubamba to have our lunch and enjoy the local food.

Once in Ollantaytambo, we will visit the archaeological complex. Build around the 15th century, Ollantaytambo is considered one of the last living Inca cities in Peru with a different atmosphere. Its Inca urban planning is still observable with water channels and Inca walls.

After our visit, towards our trip back to Cusco, we will make our last stop to visit Chinchero to learn more about an ancient activity; textile production and the culture that surround all this process.
